Van Gelder Indian Jewellery was founded in 1980 by Bernadette van Gelder – van der Ven. From these early days onwards, the firm specialized in traditional heritage jewellery from India. Travelling all over the country, together with her beloved late husband, Bernadette was dedicated to discover, understand and collect the most extraordinary quality of traditional jewellery from India. Through intensive study and research Bernadette further expanded her knowledge of the history and decorative arts of India, understanding and appreciating the use of materials and techniques, becoming one of the leading experts in this field today.
Next to different art shows in Basel, London, Amsterdam and Hong Kong Van Gelder Indian Jewellery exhibited at TEFAF Maastricht, from 1985 until 2018. By continuously collecting and researching the most extraordinary quality of traditional heritage jewellery from India, targeted at an international clientBase of private and institutional collectors, the Company grew steadily into a household name with an undisputed reputation.
Bernadette was joined by her two daughters Fleur Damman – van Gelder (1973) and Noelle Viguurs – van Gelder (1975). Afamily business in the truest sense of the word, the Company has grown to one of the leading international dealers in its field. The Van Gelders believe that their family values have been and still are conditional to their success.
Quality of personal relationships, a focus on the long term and the passing on of values and traditions, while embracing new perspectives brought in by new generations and realities, are some of the family values they cherish and that they consider to be fundamental to a sustainable, successful business.
Fleur and Noëlle gained a majority stake in Van Gelder Indian Jewellery. Shortly thereafter their perspective changed drastically when Fleur was in a severe accident while handling the families horses, which resulted in permanent brain injury (TBI) that up to this day requires her to be very disciplined in the use of her energy and limit her activity or public appearances to a minimum.
Slowly adjusting to this new reality, yet confident the best is yet to come, Noëlle and Fleur take full controlover Van Gelder Indian Jewellery. As a proud second generation family business, continuously dedicated to quality and originality, new initiatives and collaborations are developed whilst honoring the solid foundation of their first love; traditional Indian heritage Jewellery.
To mark the occasion and honour founder and mother, Bernadette was granted by her daughters Marie Claire, Fleur and Noëlle with the Bernadette van Gelder Foundation. This foundation focusses on female empowerment through education by supporting several Indian grass root organisations.
